What is Spyware? Spyware is a new classification of malicious programs and data on your machine that divulge information about you, your computer, and your computing habits to someone else or that try to disrupt or take control of your computer's operation. Sounds pretty scary, doesn't it? Unfortunately this is no exaggeration.
Here are some more specific examples of the types of things that are considered Spyware:
- Advertiser cookies
- Spyware cookies
- Hacker tools like worms and Trojan horses
- Remote control utilities that can be used for very useful purposes, but which are a risk to have installed and running all the time on your computer
Protection for threats like these is very similar to that for computer viruses. An application is installed on your machine and scans your computer's memory and storage areas for suspect data and applications. Regular scans of the entire system should be performed, just as with an AntiVirus product.
PestPatrol is the current stand-out in this area of computer protection. It can be deployed on each computer, or within an office network, and also can be managed and run by any designated server.
